Sam's Story

At 16 Sam was the full time carer for his mentally disabled mother. It was tough for Sam, growing up with the responsibility of caring for his mum, as well as the pressures of running a household alongside full time study. When Sam's mum was sectioned he decided that he was no longer able to care for her when she was well again.

After a short time of living alone, Sam was referred to Depaul UK's Supported Lodgings Scheme in Newcastle. He felt he needed freedom from the responsibilities of managing to live alone in order to concentrate on his studies. Sam was accepted onto the scheme and placed with householder Linda.

"Moving into Supported Lodgings was like a breath of fresh air. The placement was really convenient and easy and really close to my college. I also received amazing support from my project worker."

Having the support and structure that he had missed in the past allowed Sam to thrive.  Linda provided him with a safe place to stay, support and guidance when he needed it and the stability for him to succed.  He continued studying for his A levels in History, IT and Psychology, got excellent results and was accepted at Newcastle University to study History.

Sam is now at university and is really enjoying it.  He is living in student halls but still keeps in touch with Linda, his Supported Lodgings host, and has happy memories of his time in her home.  He is excited about finishing his degree and is looking forward to travelling when he has completed it

"My Supported Lodgings placement was a good experience. It provided the stability I needed to concentrate on my studies and get good grades. I really love my course here and University in general, and my Depaul UK worker has helped me re-establish a good relationship with my mum."
