This project, funded by Supporting People and Manchester Youth Offending Service, works with 12 high risk, chaotic young people aged 16-21 who have many support needs, one of which is homelessness in the city of Manchester. We take referrals from our partner agencies, including the Youth Offending Service, Barnados Leaving Care Service, City Centre Project (a drop in for homeless young people aged 16-25 in Manchester) and Counted In (a cold weather provision in Manchester.) Potential residents can be referred, assessed and accepted on the same day, but we are not a Direct Access Provision. Safestop provides short stay accommodation, with young people staying an average of six months. Individual support planning allows the young person to look at their housing, support, training, education and employment needs. Being short stay, young people are encouraged to look at their move on options early into their stay at Safestop. For many of the young people we work with, their offending histories and chaotic lifestyles can be a barrier to moving on so it is imperative that we begin to look at options early and to assist them to access the most appropriate move on accommodation. Safestop works with approximately 35 young people a year.
We have nine staff made up of a Project Manager, two Senior Project Workers and six Support Workers, as well as a fantastic bank of locum workers.
