Maggi Hambling

Maggi Hambling 200"When I was 21, in 19 swinging 66 it was pretty cool to be an art student in London. We saved hard for halves of bitter, any possible shred from Carnaby Street and thought we were “it”. I made forays into the then fashionable Pop Art and Abstract Expressionism but worked consistently in the Life Room.  No-one ever painted the models’ faces, so, of course, I did. Perhaps my portraits began there and then.

In those days 18th birthdays, let alone 21sts, were positively non-events, probably due to lack of cash.   But Depaul at 21 deserves everyone’s glass to be full several times over, mine certainly will be. Congratulations!"
